International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme at OWIS
One World International School is an authorised IB World School and as such can offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). The IBDP is an academically rigorous two-year pre-university programme recognised worldwide. It is noted for its high academic standards, preparing students for colleges and universities around the world. Through its holistic curriculum, it supports students in balancing their studies and extracurricular activities.
At OWIS, we believe the IB Diploma Programme is designed to meet the needs of our students between the ages of 16 and 18. The IBDP stretches our students by pushing them beyond the comfort zone of their two or three strongest subjects. This opens the doors to potential paths for future interests and studies.
What is the IB Diploma Programme?
The IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) is a globally renowned high school curriculum that is highly regarded by prestigious universities worldwide. Intended for students aged 16 to 18, the IB Diploma supports physical, intellectual, emotional and character development. This well-rounded approach essentially teaches students how to take initiative in their learning and expand their knowledge and skills in a structured, purposeful manner - something traditional frameworks often do not offer.
IB DP students pursue a variety of relevant topics in-depth, across subject areas, within and beyond the classroom.
The curriculum consists of several components:
Theory of knowledge (TOK). This course, which explores the nature of knowledge, is required for all IB DP students and culminates with an oral presentation and essay.
Comprehensive Course Selection. The IB DP includes traditional subjects and affords students the possibility of learning at least two languages. Students choose courses in 6 subject groups:
- The arts
- Individuals and societies
- Studies in language and literature
- Language acquisition
Whether they select courses at the standard or higher level, students have the opportunity to investigate issues - such as the impact of information technology on individuals and communities - that relate to the challenges of living in a diverse, 21st-century world. For the most part, assessments consist of written examinations, which provide a more objective, reliable measure of achievement. Teachers also evaluate assignments and projects.
Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS). CAS allows students to participate in meaningful activities that encourage them to set goals, chart their progress and reflect and report on what they learned. Examples of CAS activities and projects include:
- A musician mastering a highly difficult piece
- An athlete coaching a youth sports team or taking up a new sport
- A group of students collecting donations for less fortunate members of the community
Extended Essay. Per IB Diploma requirements, students complete a research project and write a 4,000-word paper. The extended essay not only enables students to investigate subjects that interest them but also prepares them for the rigours of undergraduate research as they learn how to frame a research question, support an argument and hone their communication skills.
The value of an IB Diploma at OWIS
As an authorised IB World School, OWIS offers the IB DP to empower students to excel beyond what they thought was possible as they prepare for university. The IB Diploma is a continuation of the International General Certificate of Secondary Education curriculum that we offer in the secondary school years.
In addition to the core IB Diploma requirements (TOK, CAS and the extended essay), our students select 6 subjects (3 standard-level and 3 higher-level) from the 6 subject groups. We provide a range of course offerings - Business Management, Mandarin, Physics, Economics and Film, to name a few - and plan to add additional courses as our programme grows.
Research shows that, compared to their non-DP counterparts, IB DP students are better able to meet high expectations, deal with demanding workloads and manage their time. Students who participate in this programme are also more likely to attend a leading university.
Additionally, the Diploma Programme aligns with our goal of preparing students to become internationally-minded, compassionate leaders who can think critically and respect different viewpoints and cultures. The IB DP equips students to flourish in higher education, careers and other aspects of life.
